MTV Movie Awards & The Little Dresses

The theme for the MTV Movie awards had to be “ the little dress” .Tinted with a sense of youth, playfulness and even simplicity. It’s like everyone looked their age . Leighton Meester, and Kristen Stewart’s were some of my favorites as they all had edge in their own way. Check out more fun dresses worn by: Taraji Henson, Rumer Willis, Monique Coleman , Lil Mama and Jamie Chung on the next page.

Randolph Engineering Sportsman

These are perfect. They look great, come in ideal colors, military issue and are very affordable at $90 US. I have liked aviators for while, but the more I try on, the more picky I am. I find buying sunglasses to be a really hard thing, the fit, the price, finding the style I actually want to try on. The whole process hasn’t been great. I am thinking of just ordering a pair of these for summer. I like everything about them. I was borrowing some of Nick’s Persols in LA and they were great, he has a nice little collection. But they are pretty hard to track down of course, at least the ones that fit me. Anyways, I’m debating ordering these. Thanks to Nick for letting me know about Randolph Engineering.

Takashi Murakami for Louis Vuitton Superflat First Love Full Version

Creating one of the most powerful brand meets artist partnerships of all-time, Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton’s relationship manifests itself in their “Superflat First Love” cartoon short. While much of Murakami’s work has often resided in the world of sculptures and the world of 2-D, the cartoon offers itself as an interesting medium. For those accustomed to Murakami’s Superflat approach, the results are every bit what we expected from the bold colors to the quirky music..

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Commune de Paris 1871

The spirit of the French Revolution lives on in Commune de Paris 1871, and thankfully, sans-culottes are nowhere to be seen in the collection. The house takes some time to answer some pre-showing questions.(--Antonio Reis).

i-D Magazine: The 300th Issue

Something of a milestone in any context, but when it comes to modern magazine publishing, this is a fantastic achievement. I’ve been a reader since I was 17 and still own those issues. At the start, a lot of the content went over my head but the photography and fashion stories kept me coming back. In time, I began to identify with more of its elements until it became an essential part of my monthly reading. There are magazines more representative of my personal tastes, some may even be more ambitious and creative, but over the years i-D has truly been the most consistent. From a young age, it introduced me to many things and has inspired more than any other. For the 300th edition, they’ve shot 3 different covers. There’ll be scans all over the internet in no time, in fact there’s a few here, but support a true great and buy an actual copy. Thanks to Christophe for letting me know it had hit the shelves.

A.P.C. Madras

A.P.C.’s summer Madras collection has hit stores again for the summer months without being overlooked by the blog world. I picked up one of the shirts last summer and got some great wear out of it. I am a fan of A.P.C.’s shirting and the slim fits, so when they do the madras cotton and the price comes down to $120 for a shirt, I can’t complain. Of course, this season Gitman Vintage is giving them a run for their money, plus Gitman has the button down collar which I prefer. If you are looking for a bright pattern shirt this summer, this A.P.C. shirt will be tough to beat. I’m not usually too into really bright patterns, but there is definitely something about this one that’s pulling me in.

John C. Jay on Urban Outfitters

This post is about two people high on my ‘People I want to interview’ list, John C. Jay, executive creative director at Wienden+Kenndy, and Glen Senk, CEO at Urban Outfitters. Both men are very inspiring, not only what they’ve accomplished, but what they are doing today. Urban Outfitters has done an incredible job, it’s undeniable. I have gone over my love / hate relationship with the store and it’s place in our market, but I have had an increasing amount respect for the people behind the brand. Urban Outfitters have carved out a very strong place in the market, growing steadily through their website, blogs and a selectively growing number of retail outlets. The semi-style conscious, strapped students, wannabe stylists, and even the snobby fashion elitists have found their haven. The store continues to push forward in all the right smart ways. As Mr. Jay points out how “Senk represents one of the richest traditions and skills of being a retail “merchant”, a combination of skills for product excellence, innovative store management…all through the lens of leading a consumer. Real “merchants” are a rare commodity today.” John C. Jay doesn’t get to the root of how exactly Senk and UO do their predictions, and stay on trend so well, but I guess that information might be worth some good money. He alludes that it’s all in the creative spirit of the of actual employees and staff in the head offices. While I believe that is probably the case for the most part, it cannot be be that easy to have such a large ship running so smoothly ahead of the pack.
