We revisit Donghyun Son’s King: Michael Jackson Portraits

While this show at Gallery2 in Seoul, Korea has already closed, Donghyun Son’s work deserves a look.

“The show, titled KING, is filled with portrayals of Michael Jackson, done in portraiture. The artist says a turning point in Michael Jackson’s career was the year 1989, when Elizabeth Taylor called him the ‘king of pop, rock and soul’ at the award ceremony for Artist of the Decade. It was then Jackson became a king, coronated by a queen of the entertainment world; this is poignant, considering that in 1989 kings of social rank no longer existed.”

Farrah Fawcett Remembered

Pop culture and television has exposed alot about society, values etc. Some good some bad, but for the most part when I think of Farraw Fawcett, her role in Charlie’s Angels comes to mind as one of the first images of women I saw in the media . Growing up in the islands, I remember my sister and I running to the television when the theme song for the show came on and being riveted to the screen as these images of stylish women who could kick butt, somehow shaped a little bit of our ideas of who we could be : The strenght , skill, sense of justice, quirkiness with a healthy dose of sexy. The shows were of course re-runs , but as little girls all we saw was the fierceness! On the next page the Farrah Fawcett poster that sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

The 1957 Indianapolis 500 | A Sideways Step into the Unknown of Auto Racing History

After 12 years of chasing victory at the Indy 500, Sam Hanks finally realized his elusive dream in a screamin’ roadster sporting a near horizontal engine designed by George Salih, chief mechanic on the winning #99 Belanger car of 1951. The world was introduced to the “lay-down” style with this history-making roadster chassis design– an engine that was tilted 72-degrees to the right, giving the racer a very low profile of just 21 inches off the ground. Salih found no financial backers for the revolutionary design, so he went it alone and built the innovative engine at his California home. Engine complete, all that was needed was the perfect driver– 42 year old veteran Sam Hanks, the legendary driver who’d come very close to winning the Indy 500 several times joined on to take a shot at history. As it turns out, this would be Hank’s last chance to leave a mark on racing history. The vintage video is rich with amazing sights and sounds that make you feel like you were there– definitely not to be missed.

Novitec Rosso - Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M

Limited to 499 vehicles, the Novitec Rosso tuned Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M pumps out 696 horse power at 512kilo watts hitting top speed of more than 330km/h. If the power stats do not impress you then the body improvements will certainly attract attention with 20 inch wheels, sports suspension, lift system on the front axle as well as body kits and accessories wrapping the Ferrari’s exterior and the interior is definitely not forgotten as well.

At the heart of this monster lies Novitec Rosso’s custom developed Race Bi Compressor engine which is a supercharged 4.3 liter V8 fully equipped with water to air intercooler. This translates to performance improvement that moves this vehicle from stand still to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and reaching 200km/h in just 9.7 seconds, while 300km/h mark is achieved in 23.8 seconds. This is a good example of well executed head turning design matched with lethal performance that may just snap some necks.

The Vintage High Life

You see that? That’s “a man’s world” there. Guys out on the town drinking suds and smoking butts in a wood paneled room. Never mind the fact that a few years later our pal Bob (on the left there), probably had a run-in with the old heart disease. At least he has all of those memories of after-work drinking with his good buddy Jack, who seems to be busy chugging that frosty mug. Eventually I bet the fellas loaded into Bob’s 1986 Chrysler station wagon and headed home before their wives got angry.
